Best Places to Eat in Maui – Lahaina Sushi Ko
I’ve dined at a lot of restaurants, and I’ve learned a universal truth about sushi: Good sushi is usually found in the unlikeliest of places. Or, in this case, great sushi – at a new restaurant called Lahaina Sushi Ko in Maui.
Why Lahaina Sushi Ko?
My family recently traveled to Maui, so I decided to write a series of blog articles called Best Places to Eat in Maui. I had a list of highly regarded restaurants to visit, but I also like to walk around new areas and stumble on unexpected and unknown restaurants because sometimes, those are the most honest and precious dining experiences.
One night we decided to have sushi, so we ran some Google searches. A few popped up, but for one reason or another, we couldn’t make it work. So, I called the phone number for a place called Sushi Ko, and they could take a party of eight. Done deal!
As I said before, good sushi is often found in the unlikeliest of places. Well, turns out that a former Maui dining gem called Main Street Bistro closed in late June 2015, clearing the path for Lahaina Sushi Ko.
Without knowing downtown Lahaina well (like us), Lahaina Sushi Ko can be a little tricky to locate. It’s in one of the many indoor-outdoor shopping areas directly on Front Street. Here’s a Google maps link to help you find it. Be patient, and when you see this, you’re there:
I was exhausted from the day, and I had not planned to write or post an article about this restaurant – which is why you will not see many images in this post.
But, after we sampled a few rolls and the most delicate Salmon Sashimi, I decided that I needed to do my part, and let people know about this heavenly sushi restaurant that had only recently sharpened its knives and opened to the public. So while this blog piece lacks some content, it makes up for it with an intense appreciation and enthusiasm for the sushi that Lahaina Sushi Ko produced that last Monday evening.
The only image of the sushi that I posted is the main image, and it’s the result of something I do often; which is to request from the sushi chef that he (or she) create a roll using a certain ingredient (in this case Alaskan King Crab) and creating a roll that is not on the menu.
This was truly one of the most divine and elegant rolls I’ve ever enjoyed. A poem of Crab, Salmon, and lovely softness on the tongue.
Why You’ll Remember Lahaina Sushi Ko
You will remember Lahaina Sushi Ko because it will have been some of the best sushi you’ve ever enjoyed, and because you were granted the luxury of dining in the delicate, salty, and open air of Lahaina on Front Street with a view of sunburned and tanned tourists and art galleries. Hard to beat that. Do it, go as soon as you can.
